AULANDER, NC – Willie Cola “Pooky” Farmer, Jr., age 90, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 24, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family.

Pooky was born on May 15, 1928 to Willie Cola and Estelle Hall Harrington Farmer in Hertford County, NC. Pooky was a member of Aulander Baptist Church and worked as a supervisor for Rose Brothers for many years. He enjoyed cutting grass and riding around on his golf cart especially with his fur companion, Max. Pooky was a true family-oriented person that loved his family dearly, getting them together and cooking for them was one of his favorite pastimes. He had many friends and when you saw “HERE COMES POOKY” you knew the horn was going to blow and he was waving and saying hey! Pooky was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend that will be deeply missed by all that knew him.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Hoggard, and two sisters, Bonnie Harrington Smith, and Ramona Farmer Shouse.

Pooky is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Elizabeth, two daughters, Rhonda Farmer Medlin and husband Edward L. of Murfreesboro, and Denise Farmer Skeens and husband Dennis of Aulander; son-in-law, Cameron M. Hoggard, Jr. of Aulander; grandson, Cameron M Hoggard, III of Greenville; granddaughter, Leslee M. Sumner and husband Christopher of Murfreesboro; great-grandson, Cashton L. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 26, 2018, from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC, and other times at the home.

When I was a young teenage boy Pooky was the supervisor for the town of Aulander maintenance department what a great man to work for he was my first supervisor and I will never forget him he was such a kind man a great leader and love people, I will never forget him nor the love and concern that he showed you a little 14, 15 year old teenage boy in the town of Aulander, North Carolina until we meet again my friend!

Pooky was my first cousin; he called me DDT. I adored him from childhood; he was about my brother’s age, and Jim adored him too, even though we lived in Washington, D. C. and only came to visit several times a year. He was funny and loving and hard working; and his family meant everything to him. When my family and I lived across the road from him for awhile over 50 years ago, he refurbished a jeep–including a top that looked like a “surrey with the fringe on top.” He would take us for rides down woods paths, and we would squeal with delight at some of his antics. Pretty soon, several family members/friends acquired old jeeps, and we played hide and seek in town, meeting at the post office and scattering to hide somewhere and then race to get back to the post office without getting caught by the seeker. Praying that God will bless his loved ones and give them peace in their grief. Love, Deedee
