William “Bill” “Toad” Shields Herring, Jr. age 70, passed away on August 18, 2017 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, North Carolina.

Bill Herring graduated from Scotland Neck High School where he was known for being the fastest runner in town during his football days. He received his A. S. Degree in Forestry from Wayne Tech which started his fifty-year career owning and operating W. S. Herring Logging Company. When it came to sports, Bill’s love was baseball. When he played with the American Legion league, Bill was a catcher for Catfish Hunter. He was a member of the Men’s Wednesday Night Supper Club that started in 1975. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry many times.  If you were to ask Bill about his most exciting adventures in life, he would have told you as a young S. N. Boy Scout Troop #57 member they made homemade rafts, put them in at Mackey’s Ferry and ended up at Atlantic Beach via the Outer Banks. As an adult, Bill would have shared his African Safari adventure. Toad, as he was so fondly called by most, was well-known as a caring, kind, very humorous gentleman that loved people, animals and his birds which explains why he and his wife are the co-founders of Sylvan Heights Bird Park in Scotland Neck.

Preceding Bill in death are his parents, William, Sr. and Edna Herring; his brother-in-law, Arrington Kitchin and his dog, Mr. Dickels.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Hanna Kitchin Herring of the home, brother-in-law, Jim Kitchin and his wife, Mary Hall of Scotland Neck, sister-in-law, Joan T. Kitchin of Virginia Beach, nieces, Katherine K. Bryant and her husband, Keith, Kim K. Schwab and her husband, James, Katy K. Anderson and her husband, Bart, and Arrington K. Carr and her husband, Ian, nephews, Rich Kitchin his wife, Lindy and Bucky Kitchin and his wife, Caroline, and many great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends, Sunday, August 20, 2017 from 7-8pm at Letchworth Funeral Home in Scotland Neck.

A Celebration of Life Graveside Service will be held on Monday, August 21, 2017, at 11am at Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery in Scotland Neck. Rev. Dr. James Drake will be officiating the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions made be made directly to Sylvan Heights Bird Park, PO Box 368, Scotland Neck, NC 27874 or by clicking here.

Hanna I am so saddened about the loss of Toad. I just saw a picture and article re Toad Hall at the bird park. What a great memory of him. I met Bill along with Kenneth Thompson when we working with Canal wood in Enfield back in 1978. Also if you remember, you and Bill went to a Hurricanes hockey game with my wife and I when I was with Pioneer Machinery. We had a great time that night. I am so sorry to here about my friend’s passing so belated and please accept our sincere condolences.
