Travis Uzzell

Mr. Travis S. Uzzell, age 81, died at Our Community Hospital in Scotland Neck on Saturday, September 26, 2009. Mr. Uzzell graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School then attended the University of North Carolina studying pharmacy. Following college, he moved to Raleigh and went to work for Merck Pharmaceuticals for a number of years. Following his work in the pharmaceutical industry, he returned to Halifax County to the home place where he took over and continued the family farming business. In 1949 he was married to Sue Bartlett. Mr. Uzzell, along with his family, have been life long members of First Baptist Church of Scotland Neck. Mr. Uzzell served many capacities at the church some of which include, deacon, chairman of deacons, chairman of finance and was a member of the Pittman Bible Class which he taught for a number of years. In 1974, Mr. Uzzell was appointed to the office of Register of Deeds for Halifax County and held that position until retiring December 31, 1993. Beyond his service to the county, Mr. Uzzell also held every office on the North Carolina Register of Deeds Association and was the North Carolina Representative to the National Register of Deeds Association. He served as county commissioner from 1960-1974, was a member of the Halifax County Board of Social Services serving from 1971-1974 holding the chair position from 1972-1974. Mr. Uzzell taught Notary Law for eight years at Halifax Community College. He was a long time member of the Kiwanis Club in Scotland Neck. In his spare time, Mr. Uzzell enjoyed mechanic work and tinkering with old cars. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and never met a stranger.

Preceding him in death are his mother and father, Thelma Lois McInturff Uzzell and Kirby Smith Uzzell and his son, Patrick Scott Uzzell.

Survivors include his wife Sarah ‘Sue’ B. Uzzell of the home, one son, Steve Uzzell and his wife, Joann of Scotland Neck, one sister, Sylvia Lois Uzzell Menard and her husband Bill of Hampstead, North Carolina, two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Scott Uzzell.

Interment will follow the service at Sunnyside Cemetery in Scotland Neck, North Carolina. Dr. James Drake and Rev. Reese Jones will be officiating.
