January 9, 1923 - March 29, 2014

Shirley Newsome VanLandingham, 91, died Saturday, March 29, 2014.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at the Baptist Cemetery in Scotland Neck. The Reverend Doctor Allen Cherry will be presiding.

The family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery.

Shirley was a loving wife and mother and was a lifelong resident of Scotland Neck. She was known for her beautiful rose garden which she nurtured for years in memory of her husband.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Thomas VanLandingham; her son, Charles Thomas VanLandingham, Jr.; and her parents, Jay J. Newsome and Frances Sears Newsome.

She is survived by her ever devoted sister, Jacqueline N. Cole of Roanoke Rapids; her loving niece, Jackie King and husband Randy of Lake Wylie, SC; and her special “godson”, Sullivan Gibbs of Raleigh, with whom she enjoyed years of after school care as his neighbor and mentor during his childhood.

It is with great appreciation that the family acknowledges the kindness and caring of those who did so much for Shirley during her long battle with Parkinson’s disease over the last decade, especially Gloria and Jackie Gibbs, Helen Sumerlin, and the staff of Roanoke Rapids Healthcare Center.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Scotland Neck, P.O. Box 539, Scotland Neck, NC 27874.

Arrangements are being handled by Letchworth Funeral Home in Scotland Neck.
