WOODLAND, NC – Sarah Ann Joyner Culpepper, wife of Luther B. “Woo” Culpepper, III, of Woodland, died June 21, 2021, at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Mrs. Culpepper was born on April 2, 1944, to the late A.S. “Monk” Joyner and Hilda Thompson Joyner. She was a 1962 graduate of Woodland-Olney High School and a 1966 graduate of Guilford College. It was at Guilford that she met “Woo” Culpepper, her future husband of 54 years.

She has two sons, Luther B. Culpepper, IV, and A. Stanley Culpepper. She has one granddaughter, Sarah Grayce Culpepper, the daughter of Stanley and Lisa Culpepper of Tifton, Georgia. Sarah Grayce’s first name was given to her in honor of Mrs. Culpepper, whose first name was given to her in honor of her own grandmother’s life-long nickname. Mrs. Culpepper also considered Katie Lee Vinson, daughter of Kelly and Sharon Vinson of Oak Island, as her eldest granddaughter.

Mrs. Culpepper was the light and life of her family; she was the absolute center of their lives. As reflected in the Book of Proverbs, her sons do rise up and call her blessed.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 24, 2021, at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square, which is the funeral home handling the arrangements and online condolences may be directed to the family by visiting www.garrettsykesfs.com. Burial will follow in the farm cemetery on Friday, June 25, 2021.

David Twiford told me of Sarah. I was so saddened to hear of this. It must be so hard to lose your partner of fifty-four years, Woo. Though I didn’t know your wife, I know the qualities she would have had from knowing you. I have been praying for you and your sons and will continue to do so. God will bring you comfort. I would have loved to have known more about your life and family which time and distance have prevented. I have great memories of our families at the beach. God bless you, Woo!

When our daughter, Lisa met Stanley we fell in love too. Meeting his Mom, Dad and brother only made our love grow. Sarah Ann was a strong lady and loving mother. Sarah Ann and Woo were great host, as we spent one Thanksgiving with them at Aunt Jayne’s.
