Ronald “Ronnie” Eugene Barrett, 79, went to his heavenly home on Monday, November 5, 2018.  He was able to spend his last days at his home in Oak City surrounded by his family.  He was born in Martin County on August 12, 1939, to the late George Wilbur and Margaret Hines Barrett.

Ronnie farmed his family’s farms and operated the cucumber market, which is currently located beside his home.  This building has always been very special to him because through it he touched the lives of so many young people.  These people continue to come back and visit and remember the good times.

Ronnie’s life was full of family, friends, and colleagues.  He never met a person who did not soon become a good friend.  He retired from Wyatt-Quarles after 24 years in 2004.  Through this endeavor he made many longtime friends.

Ronnie loved his God.  He was a life time member of the Oak City Christian Church, where he served in many roles including elder, chairman of the board, and Sunday School Superintendent.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley Whitehurst Barrett of the home; two daughters, Elizabeth (Bebie) Hines Barrett of Greenville and Jennifer Barrett Taylor and husband Kevin of Onancock, VA; two cherished grandchildren, Hamilton Burch Taylor and Hannah Barrett Taylor; and several special nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Ronald Eugene Barrett, Jr.; his mother and father; and his sister, Dolores Barrett Whitehurst.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at the Oak City Christian Church.

A celebration of life service to honor Ronnie’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at the Oak City Christian Church.  Interment will follow at the Oak City Cemetery.  The Reverend Morgan Daughety will be presiding.

Dear Shirley, Bebe and Jennifer,
I don’t know exactly where to start. I know you are smiling cause you know why. Mr. Ronnie was one of the nicest men I have ever known. He always had a smile, a kind word, a joke, and always asked about the family cause he knew us all. He knew Daddy growing up and always asked about him and I’d always tell Daddy and he’d say what a good man Mr. Ronnie was. Then all the good times we all had at Hobgood Academy at the ballgames, yelling, harrassing the refs over our girls and cheering them on. Then on to working days at Royster Clark seeing him walk in (for Wyatt Quarles) and always laughing telling me to put in a good word for him with my boss and I always did and boasted on his good work until I left work there to come back home and farm again. He always made the comment and told everybody how I came back and started farming again, helping my husband and could drive anything and do anything needed to help. I know how much you are going to miss him. There isn’t a day go by that I don’t miss Daddy and this year has flown by. But know he will always be with you in your heart and your wonderful memories that will keep you going forever, every holiday the best subject to talk about is old times and “the good old days”. I will be praying for you all but I’ve also learned over time that sometimes it is better to pray God will take the one we love as much as it will hurt because we know they have given all they could give and their journey is at an end with us but just beginning with the Lord. So know my love and prayers are with you all especially during the holidays coming up and hope to see you one day out and about. God Bless you all

Love,
Sue Stroud Davis

Ms Shirley, Bebe, and other family members. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I have had the pleasure of knowing and working for Mr. Ronnie for a long time. I always told him that remember going to the building before his house as a little boy and getting a cube of sugar. I told him I didn’t know what it was for but I wanted another. We would laugh and move on to something else. Anyone who has ever met him will never forget him. My life is richer for knowing him. Again, I am sorry for our loss.

I am so sorry to hear this, I loved him. When my daughter, Jennifer, was between 3 and 5 years old, I remember him telling me how beautiful she was. He used to see us at the Hobgood ballgames. Each and every time I have seen him since then he has always hugged my neck and told me once again how beautiful she was. Besides my daddy, he has always been one of the sweetest men I know. I will always remember his sweet face. I will cherish my hugs from him. He was loved and he will be missed. Love, Jennie Rollins.
