I will miss her smiling face and her cheerful way. She always made me feel good that we ran into each other no matter where the encounter happened to be. Super, super lady. A true friend. When she came to the Halifax County Library where I work, I knew that someone special had arrived. Count me as one of the lucky ones who knew her.

I have been thinking of you. My paryers are with the entire family. I am sorry I did not make it to the funeral. I didn't know about it until late Thursday afternoon. I will be in touch and stop in for a visit. Call me if you need anything.

To Martha's family: My deepest sympathy is extended to the children, grandchildren, family and friends of Martha. She was a very special, one of a kind, woman. Martha was one of the first people I met when I first came to Scotland Neck many years ago. She was so kind and accommodating. I would occasionally see her around town in my goings and comings. I will miss that. No doubt, Martha's light will forever shine in the hearts and minds of those whose lives she touched with her extraordinarily kind spirit and warm, loving smile. Dear Martha and Rebecca, There are times when being so far away from family is particulaly sad. I am so sorry I did not get to say good-bye to your Mother, and I wish so much that I could be with you Thursday. She made it to my Mother's funeral in 2007. I just cannot leave here this week. I still remember your parents' wedding as such a lovely event. I was young, but not too young to rejoice that she had found love! So many of the women in our families were single at advanced ages that seeing her wedding was a very big deal. By the time you were old enough to know your adult cousins, I had left Tarboro for the opportunities in Wilmington, Delaware. Visits home were so rushed I was lucky to have time to see cousin Nan and my Aunt Ruby in Tarboro, so many years passed before your Mother and I had some warm visits once again. I should explain that I am the daughter of Herman Deal Whitehead,Sr., first cousin to all the Bryants. Your great grandmother took him in along with his sister Ruby for a time after their mother died when he was still a boy. That's why Nan, Onie, and Edna were like sisters to him, and I knew Nancy as a child. Time has flown since a heart attack in 07 slowed me down and stopped the trips home. I was not aware that your Mother had become so ill, but then I never realized she was 82. She always looked younger than her age when I saw her. Losing a loved one to a cruel illness is terrible, but I know you are comforted that she was ready to meet the Lord. I'm sure He is welcoming her with the angels that she will recognize as her loved ones. On Thursday at 11, I will spend the hour with you in thoughts. Old Trinity is so imprinted in my mind that I will feel connected to all of you as you say good-bye. God grant you peace. Love, "Teen"

I know that your mother will be truely missed by many. I missed seeing her at Claudine's after she got sick. I remember the fun times we had at the ballgames in Windsor. She was always a charactor. lol :) As you two know, Charlie and I are always here if you need us. We never know the hand we will be dealt and how we will play it until it is actually dealt to us. NO one can say they know how you feel because they don't. Everyone has a different situation in their life and deal with it differently from the next. We will just pray that you will have peace, understanding and comfort in knowing that God is by your side along with many of us. All you have to do is call.

Rebecca, your Mom fought a courageous fight for many years -- she was a remarkably strong individual. Although we know that you will all miss her, we can all take comfort in knowing that she is in a better place. Peter and Ellen
