Monica Dawn Owens, 45, passed away on Monday, December 25, 2017 at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.

Dawn was born in Suffolk, VA on March 24, 1972.  A generous and loving person with a big heart, she adored animals, especially cats, and took great joy in working as a Medical Transcriptionist.  One of her favorite past times was going to the beach, where she indulged in her favorite food, crab legs.  Dawn was her Dad’s first mate on his land yacht, the Carolina Girl, and she spent many enjoyable afternoons with him on the yacht.

Dawn was preceded in death by her daddy, George Hiram Johnson; her grandparents, William and Zania Turner; and her uncle, William Stancil Turner, Jr.

She is survived by her parents, Ken and Greta Lassiter of Rich Square; and her grandfather, A.J. Lassiter of Murfreesboro.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service – Rich Square Chapel.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at the Rich Square United Methodist Church.  Interment will follow at the Pin Hook Cemetery, formerly New Hope Methodist Church Cemetery.  The Reverend Dusty Sprouse will be presiding.

To Monica’s family, my sincerest condolences. I didn’t work directly with her at the hospital, but I saw her a number of times outside of the hospital and had the chance to speak with her. She was a sweet, cheerful girl and fought her right bravely. I will always admire her spirit and her peace about everything. Prayers for her family and friends in this heartbreaking time.

I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Monica. Mere words cannot express the grief that comes from losing a loved one in death. What can give us a measure of comfort is the Bible’s promises of the day when sickness and death will be no more. Such words can hopefully ease the pain you all are experiencing at this time of sorrow. May the God of ALL comfort keep you enduring now and in the many days to come. May happy memories warm your hearts.
