Miller Jeannette Lynch Josey died at the King Bruwaert Retirement Home in Burr Ridge, IL on Friday, March 7, 2008. She was 105 years old.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 10, 2008 at the Baptist Cemetery in Scotland Neck.

Mrs. Josey was born on June 3, 1902 in Coward, SC. She was the daughter of Zolliecoffer Cockfield Lynch and Elizabeth Rebecca Ham. An ancestor, Thomas Lynch, Jr., signed the Declaration of Independence for the state of South Carolina.

After graduating from Coker College in Hartsville, SC, Mrs. Josey entered Converse College in Spartenburg, SC. After two years, her art professor thought she should go to the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts, which she did, and the training in the various mediums resulted in a lifetime hobby. She was painting watercolors at 105. In 1923 Mrs. Josey married Dr. Charles C. Josey and the couple went to Vermillion, SD, where he was head of the Philosophy and Psychology Department at the University of South Dakota. She took additional courses at the University and joined the Alpha Phi Sorority. She also joined the Paha Wakan Chapter, Daughter of the American Revolution, and was an active member of the Faculty Women's Club. In 1939 Dr. Josey joined the faculty of Butler University and the family moved to Indianapolis, IN. Again Mrs. Josey was very active in the Faculty Women's Club, and also the Southern Club, the Propoleum, and the Caroline Scott Harrison Chapter NSDAR. After 30 years, the Joseys retired to Tryon, NC. Mrs. Josey was an active member of the Tryon Garden Club, the Joseph McDowell Chapter NSDAR, and they both were active in the Tryon Congregational Church. In 1999, after the death of her husband, Mrs. Josey moved to the King Bruwaert Retirement Home in Burr Ridge, IL. There she became a member of Capt. Huberd Burrows Chapter NSDAR.

In addition to painting, Mrs. Josey loved to play bridge, give parties, and be with her family. She traveled extensively.

Mrs. Josey’s son, Charles C. Josey, Jr., died in 1992.

She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Josey Johnston and husband Logan of Burr Ridge, IL; four grandchildren, Logan Johnston, III, Lynn Martin-Sanchez, Jeannette Josey, and Jacqueline Josey; eleven great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Martin-Johnston, Julian Martin-Johnston, Miguel Martin-Johnston and wife Meredith, Lynn Rennewang and husband Dan, Tyler White, Evan White, McNeill Mulliken, Andrew Mulliken, Charlotte Johnston, Logan Johnston, IV, and Owen Johnston; and two great-great-grandchildren, Jude Logan Koch and Miguel Martin-Leynes.

Arrangements are being handled by Letchworth Funeral Home in Scotland Neck.
