Harry B. Ward, Jr.

WINTON – Harry B. Ward, Jr., 87, of the 800 block of N. Main Street, died April 14, 2009, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

Mr. Ward was born February 17, 1922 in South Mills, NC, a son of the late Harry B. Ward, Sr. and Elizabeth Bartlett Ward’ He was the widower of Melba A. Ward

Mr. Ward was a faithful member of Winton Baptist Church, which he loved. He was also a member of the North Carolina Baptist Men and the North Carolina Baptist Men’s Disaster Relief Team. He went to Haiti, England and three trips to Jamaica to help build churches, and aid in disaster relief. He worked with disaster teams in various locations in the United States.

Harry was a member of Winton Masonic Lodge # 723 where he served many times as Master. He was also a member of Harrellsville Chapter # 99 Order of the Eastern Star, where he served as Worthy Patron and many other offices. He also served as Grand Sentinel of the State Chapter of the Eastern Star.

He served in the Navy during WWII as a Boatswain Mate and served in the Army at Fort Bragg during the Korean conflict.

Captain Harry, as he was affectionately known, worked with Union Camp Corporation for 44 years before his retirement. He was Captain of the tugboat Corinthia , American Eagle, Tuscarora and the Cotton ‘J’ and Supervisor of Marine Operations.

He is survived by one son, William Bartlett Ward and his wife Sandra P. Ward, of Winton; three daughters, Mary Etta W. Flowers and husband, Gene Flowers of Murfreesboro, Melba E. ‘Beth’ of the home, and Matilda E. ‘Teena’ DeSimone and husband, Doug of Gaithersburg, MD; four grandchildren, Andrea F. Calvert and husband, Jeff of Clayton, Paul Ward of Scotland Neck, Michael Woodard and wife Malinda of Conway, and Joni W. Gray and husband Steve of Suffolk, Va. and 5 great grandchildren, R.B. and Alex Ward, Macie Calvert , and Linley and Mikey Woodard. Mr. Ward was predeceased by one brother, Charles E. Ward.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 17, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Winton Baptist Church with the Rev. Joseph Futrell officiating. Burial will follow in the Winton Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held at the home, 803 N. Main Street in Winton, on Thursday, April 16 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Winton Baptist Church.
