Hi,John, Susan, Laura, and LeighLeigh:

Ann and I send our sympathy and want you to know you are in our thoughts and prayers.

George was a great fellow. He was a good, faithful churchman and taught Sunday School at the church for many, many years.

I suppose you know, but if you don’t I will always be indebted to him for his help with the object lessons I had with the kids during the church service. When I had a thought that I wanted to talk with the children about he would help me come up with one of the “toys” in the Physics lab. He was a an original thinker and came up with some great object lessons.

The church, university, and Murfreesboro has lost a great personality.

It was my privilege to have been a colleague of George for nearly 45 years as we came to work at Chowan University the very same year. His children and my children had grown up together. I was privileged to have had George to teach for me for over 30 years in the Upward Bound summer program and as always he did an outstanding job. One of the great things about Chowan down through the years has been and remains its ability to attract outstanding professors and George ranked right at the top of the list. But there was another side to George that many people did not know and that was that he loved to visit Walter’s Grill, Red Lobster and he enjoyed watching old movies and shows and stories about World War II. May his family take comfort in knowing that George touched the lives of many, many people and he will be missed.

Hazeltons, George and I shared third floor Camp Hall for many years; we were both music lovers. When teaching responsibilities slowed on Friday afternoons, one could usually hear Jimmy Buffet coming from his place. However, during exam times the sound often changed to classical things such as Pachelbel’s Canon in D. And, I confess learning to play that beautiful work (with violin)because of GLH.

Jim and I also remember “cutting our teeth” on Apple computers because George bought them for physics labs.

Nancy, thanks for the privilege of babysitting John when he was only days old

I am extremely saddened to hear about the death of my first mentor of astronomy, George Hazelton, and I send my deepest condolences to his family.

As my Sunday School teacher, when my family first moved to town he taught me the correct way to say Murfreesboro (Muffissbora) and his unwillingness to write new questions for his Bible Game, after I had memorized them all, allowed me to win lots of candy while he chuckled behind a desk in his professorial elbow-patched tweed blazer.

As a physics teacher, when he learned I wanted to become an astronomer, he helped to encourage the passion I had for science, giving me ideas for experiments and allowing me access to his classroom, equipment, and telescopes. And, even though I was a teenager, he told me to take and sit in on his astronomy labs, something which, now that I’m an astronomy teacher at a university myself, I now see as an extremely kind thing to do/put up with.

After he saw a poster presentation of mine a few years ago at the NC Astronomer’s Meeting, he let me know how excited and proud he was now that I had become a full fledged astronomer, a comment which has meant a great deal to me.

I’ll never forget him with his pipe (a la the great Edwin Hubble) while we watched Comets Hykutake and Hale-Bopp, his witty puns and thinly veiled Jimmy Buffett references, and the low-rumbling mumbles of inspiration that helped me to continue in astronomy, or as he explained it to me: “the science racket.”

You are in my thoughts and prayers. What a priviledge it was to have known you dad and husband. The neighborhood memories, with all of you, are very precious to me and my family. May the good Lord put his loving arms around you and give you comfort and peace through this difficult time.

With love, Mary Harris

I will never forget being in Dr. Hazelton’s physics class at Chowan and how we could bring in a notecard with all we could possible get written on it for a test (you can get a lot if you write small). He was a neat teacher to have and had some great kids to be friends with growing up. I am thinking of you all during this sad time and praying that God’s comfort and peace with be with you today and in the days ahead. Blessings to all. Marcia

George and I were classmates in high school in Greenville NC, for about three years, the 8th through the 10th grades. He was a dear friend and life time buddy. We kept in contact with over the years. He once came to California for a Conference at Fresno State University and we spent time touring the local Sequoia National Park and other sights. I remember him as a kind, caring person whom will remain in my memories forever. To those whom he taught over his long teaching career I know you had a great instructor, friend and mentor.
