Passed Away: October 20, 2007

Edith Miriam Sykes was born on March 9, 1918 in Halifax County and died on October 20, 2007 at the age of 89.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 23, 2007 at Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield. The Reverend Alvin Davis will be presiding.

Edith was the last of her line, having been predeceased by her parents, Milton Sykes and Hattie Sexton Sykes; her brothers, Robert Edward Sykes, Sr. and Marion Parker Sykes, Sr.; and her sister, Elsie Ray Batchelor.

“Aunt Ne” is survived by her beloved sister-in-law, Doris Sykes, and her children, Marion and Gwen Sykes of Havelock, Horace Sykes of Greenville, Alan and Tanya Sykes of Graham, Phillip and Wanda Sykes of Enfield, and Phyllis Parker of Greenville. She also leaves to cherish her memory, Jean Arrington of Battleboro; and numerous other nieces, nephews, and friends.

“Aunt Ne” was an intelligent, articulate, and proud Southern lady who loved roses, local politics, crossword puzzles, Scrabble, and lively conversation. Most of all she loved her family. As she requested, her memorial will read simply, “I love you”.

The family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by Letchworth Funeral Home in Scotland Neck.
