Dr. John Jackson “Jack” Edwards, Jr., 78, died Thursday, January 6, 2011.

A memorial graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at Sunnyside Cemetery in Scotland Neck. The Reverend Tom Jackson will be presiding.

Dr. Edwards was born on December 5, 1932 and was a native of Sharpsburg. After studying science at Wake Forest University, he attended the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN. He passed the state board and became an Optometrist in July 1957. Dr. Edwards opened his Scotland Neck practice on September 24, 1957. He and his wife, Shirley, worked together serving the Scotland Neck community for over 50 years. Dr. Edwards retired on December 30, 2008 in order to spend more time visiting with his children and grandchildren, and reading.

Dr. Edwards was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth Burton Edwards.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Ricks Edwards; daughter, Debbie Richardson and husband Bob of Knightdale; sons, Johnny Edwards and wife Kathy of Frederick, MD and Michael Ray Edwards and wife Beth of Wake Forest; sisters, Glenda Gibson and husband Stan of Columbia, SC and Sarah Joyner and husband Leaston of Sharpsburg; brother, W.L. “Shorty” Edwards and wife Ruth Ann of Atlantic Beach; and two grandchildren, Angela Edwards and Chris Edwards.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 7, 2011 at Letchworth Funeral Home in Scotland Neck.

Arrangements are being handled by Letchworth Funeral Home in Scotland Neck.
