Your mother was an angel walking this earth. My mother and her sister were at Guardian Care for over 23 years. Dot
always visited them, brought them little goodies and was a complete joy to
them. No one will ever know how very much I appreciated everything she did for both of hem. One of the most generous human beings I ever knew. God Bless all of you. Betty Peele

Whit and Chris,
Your mom was a wonderful, strong influence in my life as a student at Ahoskie High School, class of '61. Before she was my English teacher, she was our faculty advisor for the POW WOW.
She taught us how to create and to produce an award winning school newspaper. She encouraged us to excellence in English. She expanded our horizons by taking us to national conferences in New York City.I was so excited to see her several years ago and to be able tell her what an incredible influence she had been in my life!
I know you will miss her greatly, but just know that you and your families will always have your wonderful memories of her and all that she has been to you over the years. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families.

I would like to express my condolences to the Powell family. Dorothy Powell taught me English three out of my four years at AHS, and she impacted my life tremendously, as she did the lives of all of her students. She will live forever in the hearts of the students who were fortunate enough to have her.

I just want to offer my sympathies to Whit and Chris. Mrs. Powell was a wonderful teacher, with a real heart for her students. When she retired, I know she was missed at the school. But the Ahoskie community will miss her now for all of the services and ministries that she provided for many people. It was a honor to have her as my teacher!

She sought and brought the best out of her students. The most intelligent woman I have ever known. She was so respected by everyone around her. Great lady!

Whit, Chris and Families,
Your Mother was a very special woman, teacher, parent and friend. She shared her love and knowledge so freely. I can still remember her standing beneath one of the very tall windows at Ahoskie High School telling our tenth grade class that learning to use proper English was crucial if we ever wanted to accomplish great things. Her commitment was to teach us, not by memorizing a lot of rules from our text but to listen to correct English and to speak correct English. What an unbelievable teacher!!! I can‚??t quote the rules but I can easily use what she taught us.
Your Mother influenced so many people and left such a legacy among the students she taught. She left good stock to carry on her tradition in your family. She is truly ONE of a kind.
I wish all the best for you all as you celebrate her life.
Warm Regards
Ralph Mosley

Her helpful advice, great sense of humor, and knowledge of the English language and literature were instrumental during my college years. My condolences to her family and dear friends...

Indeed we all are saddened by Mrs. Powell's passing, but the touch of her spirit remains with each of us. She was the consummate teacher literally until the end.
On a personal note, her English classes on the detailed structure of language
stood me in good stead as I pursued a career as a professional linguist. When I visited Ahoskie I never missed the opportunity to share this with her. There is no greater reward for a teacher.
Dot Powell's legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of the thousands of
students whose lives she touched in so many ways.
We have truly lost a special mother, teacher, citizen and Christian. Rest in peace dear lady.

Whit & Chris,
So sorry to hear about your Mom. She was such a sweet, Christian lady and the best English teacher anyone could have ever had. I was so blessed that our paths crossed: first being her English student then becoming her co-worker later in life. She was a good friend and I always enjoyed being around her. She might have been a lady of small statute but when she spoke - everyone listened.
She loved you boys so much and was so proud of both of you. Cherish all the wonderful memories of her and know that you have my deepest sympathy. You had a very SPECIAL mother and she will be missed by all of those who were fortunate enough to have come in contact with her.
