To Ms. Askew’s family: I am so saddened to hear of Ms. Daphne’s passing. She was my algebra teacher at Ahoskie High School and had the most patience of any teacher I ever met! She even took me to her house after school to try to help me, but I never could get past algebra. She was always smiling and I remember her as a comforting presence at all times. She was a fun person, a great person and a wonderful teacher. My condolences to the family, and to Ms. Daphne, “Thank you for everything, and Godspeed.”

To the family of Mrs. Askew:

I have fond memories of your dearly departed mother, grandmother and great grandmother. As a freshman at Ahoskie High School in 1977, Mrs. Askew was my algebra teacher. The subject matter was quite difficult for me and admittedly it was a struggle. Mrs. Askew permitted me to come to her classroom after school and there she answered on numerous occasions all of my algebra questions. She took time out of her schedule to assist a young African-American student having difficulties in her class. For me she represented the type of teacher from the “old school” that seemed to give individualized instruction that you remember for a lifetime. The spark of knowledge that she initiated for me doing those sessions in later years formed a blazing fire of desire to learn science. Thanks in part to her unwavering support and individualized instruction I was able to leave Ahoskie High and earn a bachelor’s, master’s and PhD degree in chemistry.

To the family, you can be assured that she set an amazing standard that I like numerous other students shall never forget. The word of God is clear to those who know Jesus Christ…..to be absent from this body is to be present with the Lord. Therefore, I know we shall see her again in heaven.

Yours in Christ,

Rev. Dr. Gregory D. Clark
