VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Cyrus Talmage Wynns, Jr., age 91, of Portsmouth, passed away on Friday, January 1, 2021 at the Sentara Hospice House of Virginia Beach, VA.
Mr. Wynns was born on May 3, 1929 to Cyrus Talmage Wynns, Sr. and Ethel Louise Harden Wynns in Rocky Mount, NC. Cyrus served his country proudly during the Korean War in the Army, in the 7th Calvary Regiment. A fond memory of a fishing trip on the Chowan River, “was saving the buck”, a deer stranded in the river and saved by Cyrus by going out on the boat and grabbing hold of his antlers until he got him back to safety. After serving his country he came back to Ahoskie and worked as a foreman for Bennett Box Company in Ahoskie. Following an automobile accident and having to find a more suitable job, he became a Sawsmith for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard where he retired from government services. Cyrus was an avid baseball fan and playing semi pro in the Ahoskie area. He also enjoyed golfing, even making par on his 80th birthday on a par 4, which was a great gift for him. Cyrus, “Papa CT”, was loved by his family and friends deeply.
Along with his parents, Cyrus was preceded in death by a brother, Agustus Wynns, first wife and mother of his children, Janice Gray Wynns, and second wife, Josephine M. Wynns.
Cyrus is survived by a son, Frank Wynns and wife Deborah Jean; two granddaughters, Chloe Elizabeth Wynns, and Carlie Gray Wynns, all of Virginia Beach, VA.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 7, 2021, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC. Due to the pandemic, COVID-19, everyone is asked to wear a mask and remember social distancing when paying their respects to the family.
A private family service will be held at the Stoney Creek Cemetery, Ahoskie, NC.
