Charles Herbert "Charlie" Hale, Sr.

Passed Away: May 25, 2007

Charles Herbert “Charlie” Hale, Sr., 92, died late Friday May 25, 2007.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at the Trinity Episcopal Cemetery in Scotland Neck.

Charlie was born March 28, 1915 in Hobgood to the late George Herbert Hale and Annie Thigpen Hale. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty years, Margaret Coates Hale.

He was a member of the class of 1938 at NC State University and a member of the Lambda Chi Fraternity. He served in the United States Army in the European Theatre during World War II. Charlie loved the outdoors and his career with Riverside Manufacturing Company, which later merged with Georgia Pacific Corporation, allowing him to spend time in the forests of North Carolina and Virginia. A lifelong Episcopalian, Charlie was active in many clubs, organizations, and boards in Scotland Neck and Halifax County. He gave the Sallie Billy House, which is now restored in Historic Halifax. Charlie was also a registered land surveyor in Scotland Neck and Eastern NC for many years. Many people relied on his knowledge of property in the Scotland Neck area. All who knew and loved him will miss the compassion, kindness, and keen wit of this gentle man.

Charlie is survived by his daughter, Geneva “Genny” Hale Etheridge and husband Ed of Wilson; son, Charles H. Hale, Jr. and wife Mary Duane of Morehead City; and grandchildren Margaret Quinn Etheridge, James “Jim” Edward Etheridge, Jr., Mary Charles Hale, and Charles H. Hale, III

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 28, 2007 at Letchworth Funeral Home in Scotland Neck.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Episcopal Church General Building Fund, 1305 Main Street, Scotland Neck, NC 27874.

The family is very thankful for the special love and caring given by Maggie Mitchell and Catherine Council.

Arrangements are being handled by Letchworth Funeral Home in Scotland Neck.
