SCOTLAND NECK, NC – Alice Jean Darden May, age 85, passed away on February 6, 2022 at Bryan Health and Rehab of Scotland Neck.

Mrs. May was born on August 10, 1936 to John Moses Darden and Sallie Dilday Darden in Southampton County, Virginia. Alice was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She cherished her grandchildren and loved all animals, especially dogs. Alice worked for over twenty years for Drs. Sutton and Byrum and was a member of Dawson Baptist Church. She was a talented seamstress and would sew many pieces of clothing for her family. Two of Alice’s favorite pastimes were shopping and spending time at the beach. She was loved by many and will be deeply missed.

Along with her parents, Alice was preceded in death by two brothers, John Robert Darden and Jethro L. Darden.

Alice is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Adrian; two daughters, Donna Maria May (Martin Keith May) and Alice “Charlene” May both of Scotland Neck; a son, Adrian Franklin “Frankie” May Jr. (Susan “Susie” B.) of Scotland Neck; one granddaughter, Mandy Nicole Monroe of Las Vegas, NV; three grandsons, Joseph Paul King, Jr., Adrian Christopher “Chris’ May, and William James “Will” May all of Scotland Neck; one great-granddaughter, Elena Nicole Lee of Las Vegas, NV; two sisters, Faye Darden Griffin (John) of Daytona Beach, FL and Jeanette Darden Bussell (Dave) of Jarratt, VA; special friends, Glenda and Lee Marks and Frank and Teresa Gonzalez all of Scotland Neck; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Kay and Kandace of AseraCare Hospice of Greenville for their kindness and wonderful care of Mrs. Alice during her sickness. Also the family would like to thank the staff of Bryan Health and Rehabilitation.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 10, 2022 from 10:00-10:45 a.m. at Dawson Baptist Church, with a celebration of life service following at 11:00 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Ricky Sorie.

The family has requested that all attending please wear a mask.

I remember Alice very well as I worked with her for at least a summer at the doctor’s office. She was kind and caring. I’m so sorry for your loss. I know she was a wonderful mother and grandmother.

So sorry for your loss. Not only did I work with Alice a long time, but we became friends! She always made the best coconut and pecan pies and shared them with many. I know she will be greatly missed, but I’m glad she is not suffering anymore. All of you are in my thoughts and prayers.
