William Walter Leggett, Sr. age 75 of Hobgood, NC passed away on August 28, 2017 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC.

Walter was born on April 6, 1942 to the late Robert and Eleanor Leggett. He was married to the late Patricia “Pattie” Smith and to this marriage was born two children. Walter worked in the textile industry until retiring in 2014. He was a very active member of the Hobgood United Methodist Church and retired from years of service in the Hobgood Volunteer Fire Department where he served as Chief for a number of years.  Walter was a 32nd Degree Master Mason and was a member of the Scotland Neck Lodge #689, Concord Lodge #58 in Tarboro, and a member of the Valley of New Bern Scottish Rite. He received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine from Gov. Mike Easley. His first wife, Pattie, passed away in 1988 and in 1990 Walter married Sara Hartman.

Other than his wife, Pattie, and his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his dog, Dot.

Walter is survived by his wife, Sara;  his daughter, Anne Moore and Ryan Joseph Howard Leggett of Leland, NC; son, William Walter “Dubby” Leggett, Jr. of Hobgood, NC; two stepsons, Bryon Douglas Hartman of Fort Lauderdale, FL and Boyd David Hartman of Sterling, VA; three sisters, Betsy Leggett Bridgers and her husband Joe of Smyrna, GA, Frances Leggett Vick and her husband Mike of Wilson, NC and Little Leggett Shuford and her husband Robert of Greensboro, NC; three brothers, Robert Edward  Leggett Jr. and his wife Pat of Lumberton, NC, Enoch Leggett and his wife Debby of Baldwin, GA and Sammy  Leggett and his wife Rita of Mint Hill, NC; two granddaughters, Marissa Elizabeth Howard of Leland, NC and Emily Grace Leggett of Rocky Mount, NC; two grandsons, Robert Joshua Howard of Leland, NC, Samuel Aiden Leggett of Rocky Mount, NC; two step grandson, Tyler Bryon Hartman of Parisburg, VA and Chase Hartman of Sterling; VA; two step granddaughters, Kristina Kay Hartman of Largo, FL and Emma Grace Hartman of Sterling, VA and step great granddaughter, Rylee Grace Hartman of Parisburg, VA. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church of Scotland Neck with the Rev. Dr. Jim Drake and Rev. Ron Elkins.  Interment with Masonic Rites will follow at Hobgood Cemetery.
