Spencer Louis Harrell, Sr., 93, went to his heavenly home on Wednesday, November 29, 2017. He was able to spend his last days at his home in Oak City surrounded by family and friends.
The first of five children, Spencer was born on November 2, 1924 in Oak City, North Carolina to the late Ben Harrell and Annie Brown Harrell.
After graduation from Oak City High School, Spencer began a career designing and building homes and agricultural buildings in Martin and surrounding counties. In 1959, Spencer married the love of his live, Patsy Potter after a successful blind date. After a brief period of living in Rocky Mount, they moved back to the Oak City area where he continued to build and raise two children.
Spencer loved God, loved his family and loved his community. A humble man, Spencer served the local community in many capacities. He was a member of the Oak City Baptist Church where he was a deacon for over 50 years and oversaw several renovations and additions. He was also a member of the Ruritan Club, an Oak City Town Commissioner, and a member of several other organizations. Adequate health care was one of Spencer’s passions. He was one of the founders of the Pittman Memorial Health Clinic and served on the Board of Trustees of Martin General Hospital. His legacy will be how he helped others and the community by generously giving of his time, talents and treasure, doing whatever was needed to make a difference.
Spencer is survived by his wife of 58 years, Patsy, two children, Spencer Harrell, Jr. and wife Rebecca of Raleigh, NC, and Ruth Ann Townsley and husband Paul, of Chesapeake, Virginia, four grandchildren, Sarah, Christian, Kathryn and Brittan, brother Ray Harrell and wife Kitty of Glassboro, NJ and sister Dorothy Weathersby of Hobgood, NC, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Melvin Harrell and sister Mary Harrell Tanner.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, December 3, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the Oak City Baptist Church. Burial will follow at the Oak City Cemetery. The Reverend Lyle Brackin and the Reverend Delmus Ayers will be officiating.
A visitation will be held Saturday, December 2, 2017 from 4:30 to 6:00 PM at the Oak City Baptist Church.
The family would like to thank all the caregivers who so graciously gave in order that Spencer could spend his last months at home. Their compassion and loving support meant to world to Spencer and the family will never be able to say thank you enough.
