Mr. Leonard J. Bunting, age 90, passed away on August 1, 2017 at his residence.
Mr. Bunting was born on October 26, 1926 to Willie Spencer and Catharine Harrell Bunting in Martin County, NC. He was a Veteran of the US Army and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Scotland Neck. He worked for Planters Chemical Company, later named Kaiser, for 23 years. Leonard owned and operated Farmland Tractor, Bunting’s Auto, Bunting’s BBQ Stand, and Bunting’s Lumber Company. He was also involved in real estate. He loved the town of Scotland Neck, serving as a town commissioner prior to becoming mayor, always dedicating his time to better the town. Leonard and his late wife Dollie were the founders of the annual Crepe Myrtle Festival and headed up the Christmas Parades for many years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend that will be deeply missed by all that knew him.
Besides his parents, Leonard was preceded in death by his first wife, Lillian A. Bunting, and second wife, Sarah “Dollie” Whitford Bunting, step-son, Allen Ray Morris, four brothers; Maurice, Odell, Ira and Stuart Bunting, and one sister; Alice Louise Bunting.
Leonard is survived by his daughter, Kathy Bunting Leggett and husband Art of Washington, NC; two sisters, Joyce Vaughan of Scotland Neck, and Peggy Wall of Roanoke Rapids, NC; one brother, Kenneth Bunting of Suffolk, VA; two granddaughters; Katherine Davis and her husband Dixon of Washington, NC, and Sarah Beth Warren and her husband Ronnie of Grimesland, NC; two grandsons; Joel Leggett and his wife Penny of Washington, NC, and Jeff Morris and his wife Sarah of Newport, NC; two great-grandsons, Seth Leggett and Braxton Morris; four great-granddaughters; Savannah Leggett, Lilly Ann and Elanor Davis, and Blythe Morris, and one stepdaughter-in-law, Jenny Morris of Fremont, NC. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
A celebration of life graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2017,at 11 AM, at the Baptist Cemetery, Scotland Neck, NC, with the Rev. Dr. Steven Allsbrook, officiating. The family will receive friends following the graveside service and any other time at the home.
