Mr. Hubert Joseph Lassiter, age 94 of Woodland, died at his home on Sunday, July 22, 2018 of natural causes.  He was born on January 23, 1924 in Ahoskie to Harvey and Lizzie Mulder Lassiter.  Hubert married Louise Harrell on October 19, 1946 and to this union was born four sons.

Hubert joined the Army at age fifteen in November of 1940.  He served with the Corps of Engineers for the Panama Canal Department.  At the beginning of WWII, Hubert was sent to service in the European Theatre, where he survived the 2nd wave at Utah Beach during the D Day Invasion.  He was discharged in October of 1945 and later joined the National Guard in Lasker and served until his retirement.  Although he was one of the finer examples of the Greatest Generation, he never spoke of his own heroism or bravery.  His children and grandchildren have been and always will be proud of his service to our country.

Hubert ultimately retired from Newsom Oil Company in Roanoke Rapids in 1987, after working with his son, Allen, for the last sixteen years of his employment.

Known for his extreme honesty, Hubert also believed you gave to everyone long before you ever expected anything in return.  Throughout his life, Hubert practiced and believed the Golden Rule of “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

Preceding him in death were his wife, Louise; an infant son, Robert Joseph; his parents; three brothers; and three sisters.

He is survived by three sons; Eddie Dale Lassiter of Athens, TX; Hubert Allen Lassiter and his wife Phyllis Branch Lassiter of Rich Square, and Larry Wayne Lassiter and his wife Gwen Reinhardt Lassiter of Woodland.  He is also survived by seven loving grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

Graveside memorial services with military honors will be conducted on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at 11 am at the Woodland Cemetery in Woodland with the Rev. Bob Rogers officiating.

Anyone wishing to pay their condolences may do so at the home of Allen and Phyllis Lassiter in Rich Square where the family will be gathered.

The family would like to thank Dr. John Stanley for his years of devotion to Hubert, Louise and other family members.  A thank you to Mrs. Ruth Askew, as a special lifelong friend of Hubert’s.

Mr Hubert was always a nice neighbor, we would have as we passed on lawnmowers or have a chat about the world and weather standing in our yards, he was always a true gentleman, he will be missed amongst our community. Thinking of you all in the time of grief.
