MURFREESBRO, NC ‑ Raymond Hargus Taylor, age 85, passed away on October 30, 2016, at the Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital of Ahoskie, NC

Dr. Taylor was born in Bell County, KY, on October 4, 1931 a son of the late Clyde C. and Edna Turner Taylor. Hargus was a 1949 graduate of Middlesboro High School in Kentucky.  After High School he received AA degree from Cumberland College in 1951, his BA degree from Carson‑Newman College in 1953, a BD degree and his ThD from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in ’56 and ’61.  In 1954, Hargus married the love of his life, Doris Tittsworth in Knoxville Tennessee.  From this union, two children were born of whom they are very proud.  During his career, he served as minister for several churches before serving as Chaplain and other various capacities at Chowan University, including serving as Chairman of the Department of Religion & Philosophy from 1991‑1999.  Hargus was especially proud of his time as Academic Advisor to the Chowan Men’s Basketball Team during Bob Burkes Tenure.

Hargus and Doris were longtime members of Murfreesboro Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, teacher of the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class and member of the Chancel Choir, as well as many other various committees.  They are both active in Hertford County Habitat for Humanity, of which he was a founding member.  Dr. Taylor’s interest in historical research, writing, music, and genealogical research led him to write and publish several church histories, all of which he was very proud.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife Doris Tittsworth Taylor, Son, his son Warren Taylor, and wife, Lisa of Indian Trail, NC; his daughter, Marcia Thompson and husband, Philip of Sioux Falls, SD; a granddaughter, Jessica Longino and husband, Walter of Indian Trail, NC; and four grandsons, William Taylor and wife, Kelly of Indian Trail, NC, Nathanael Thompson, Andrew Thompson and Matthew Thompson all of Sioux Falls, SD.  Also surviving are two sisters, Sylvia Arnett of Cumberland Gap, TN, Teresa Dodson and husband, Cliff of Asheville, NC; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life service will be held on Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at 11:00 am at the Murfreesboro Baptist Church, with Dr. Philip Thompson, Rev. Joe Clontz, and Rev. Mari Wiles, officiating.  Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery with visitation after the committal at the cemetery.

Gayle and I are very sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Hargus Taylor, lovingly thought of as “Pope” during our time at Chowan in the mid ’60s. Dr. Taylor was nice to marry us, and for that we are grateful. Dr. Hargus Taylor was a BEST of the BEST, will be greatly missed. Our sympathies go to Mrs. Taylor and the Taylor family. May God Bless Dr. Hargus Taylor, as we will see him again, with his BIG smile.

I am very sorry to hear about chaplain Hargus Taylor’s passing. I only heard about this yesterday and came as a very big shock to me. Dr Taylor and his wife were a very big influence in my life and my brothers. Without their kindness and support I don’t think Thomas and I would’ve made it to the United States, secured a great education and careers. We will always be in your debt. We as human beings do not reach out to the people we love and and admire and tell them how much they mean to us till they are gone. I want to thank you Mr and Mrs Taylor for all you have done for me and Thomas. Mrs Taylor I am very sorry for your loss, my prayers are with you and with your family.

Hargus was my cousin, whom I loved very much! He was like a brother to me. He was very special to the Turner and Bice families. Hargus love family and doing family genealogy, and I thank him for getting me involved in our family genealogy. It is something we both loved. Hargus and Doris helped to plan our Turner Family reunion, until he became too ill to attend. He will be missed more than I can say. He and I were fans of the Detroit Tigers, and often talked about how good or bad the Detroit Tigers were doing. Hargus was the best! My thoughts and prayers are with Doris, Warren & Lisa, Marcia & Phillip, and their grandchildren.

Hargus and I were part of the Chowan family for many years. He had a wonderful sly sense of humor. I have fond memories of our association at Chowan especially those early summer fishing trips. Doris I hold you and your family in my thoughts and prayers at this time.

Chap Taylor and Mrs. Taylor were some of the kindest people I met during my time at Chowan College. They were helpful to me in more ways than I can recount and welcomed me into their home on holidays and special events. Scholarship monies that he helped secure were a huge part of my being able to afford to go to college. I am forever indebted to the Taylors for everything. Mrs. Taylor and family we mourn with you in this time of loss and rejoice at our eventual homecoming.
